Reggie Bush

I was never so happy as to watch Texas triumph last year over USC in the Rose Bowl. In light of more recent allegations against Reggie Bush, I just want to emphasize how much respect I have for a student who has the "focus, intensity, and relentless effort to shelve over 450,000 books": http://www.theonion.com/content/node/53083

Welcome to the blogosphere.

The Onion is hilarious. But, the real joke is the farce that major college sports have become! Why do we even have to pretend Reggie Bush "didn't know" his family wasn't paying rent on their new home? Why does the NFL get a free minor league system?

In baseball, only a small percentage of the best players attend college. Most enter professional sports directly. Football and basketball each have virtually no minor league system other than the NCAA. This system was never equipped to deal with the exorbitant amount of TV money being thrown around. Thus, schools such as USC, Ohio State and others earn millions of dollars in revenue with what amount to indentured servants.

Oh, but they do get their degrees...(cue the uproarious laughter).

I've never been one to criticize athletes for leaving college to attain millions in pro-ball. Ok, I have been. But, this is their choice and it's easy to sit back and tell my friends that I would have taken the high road and got my degree instead. Fine. But, it also gets to me that he did pretend to now know. And he accepted the Heisman trophy for athletic excellence in an ACADEMIC arena!

NCAA football is great. College sports are great. I hope it stays that way and they take that trophy back.
